Wind Speed Box-Plot
Purpose
The Wind Speed Box-Plot summarizes the statistical distribution of reconstructed wind speed over the main analysis year.
It provides a compact representation of dispersion, central tendency and range.
How It Is Computed
Wind speed is deterministically reconstructed from the ERA5 10u and 10v components.
All hourly wind speed values within the validated annual dataset are used.
No directional grouping or class discretization is applied in this view.
Displayed Statistics
The box-plot displays:
-
Minimum value
-
First quartile (Q1)
-
Mean
-
Third quartile (Q3)
-
Maximum value
The box represents the interquartile range (Q1–Q3).
The central marker indicates the mean value.
Interpretation
The box-plot allows rapid assessment of:
-
Typical wind speed levels (interquartile range)
-
Distribution symmetry
-
Variability across the year
-
Presence of high or low extremes
Unlike the Wind Rose or Frequency Tables, this plot does not depend on directional sectors or wind speed class schemes.
Data Scope
The Box-Plot:
-
Uses only the complete main analysis year.
-
Excludes records outside the annual window.
-
Is based exclusively on reconstructed wind speed.
-
Applies no interpolation.
Relation to Other Outputs
The Box-Plot complements the Histogram by describing statistical dispersion rather than frequency of predefined classes.
